Empathy is a great trait, it helps us relate to others and have relationships with people. Having too much empathy while doomscrolling can lead to negative thoughts and depression.
When you start to notice that you've been looking at a lot of negative news, take a break from screen time. That might even mean turning off notifications for news updates.
What is doomscrolling?
- Excessive consumption of negative news
- Constantly looking for stories about diseases, violence, or death
How does it impact mental health?
- Contributes to anxiety and depression
- Increases loneliness
- Can create a loop of depression that weighs you down
How to combat doomscrolling?
- Turn off push notifications for news alerts
- Take breaks from screen time
- Spend time outside or doing hobbies
With everything going on in the world, I've done it too. I've noticed the way all the negative news can impact my mood, so I've started being selective about what news I read. I like to stay up to date with current events, but I've started limiting how much time I spend reading the news and at what time of day I catch up on news.
It's important to protect your peace.
