The “Winter Slow-Down” mindset: how to feel calmer this season

This time of year, everything in nature slows down.

The days are shorter, mornings are colder, and nights feel a little quieter.

And it’s okay for us to slow down too.

When we move through life at the same fast pace all year long, our nervous system never really gets a break.

Slowing down (on purpose) tells your body it’s safe.

It helps you feel calmer, more present, and less caught up in the constant rush of thoughts.

If you want to have a softer, more grounded season, here are a few small ways to practice the Winter Slow-Down Mindset:

1. Try “single-tasking” instead of multitasking

Most of us move through our days doing three things at once (I know I do).

Scrolling while we eat, thinking about work while folding laundry, or answering texts mid-conversation.

This constant multitasking keeps our nervous system in alert mode.

Try choosing one thing each day to give your full attention to.

It could be sipping your morning coffee, brushing your hair, or even washing your hands.

Let yourself be in that moment, and notice how much calmer your body feels afterward.

2. Add a “soft start” to your morning

Instead of waking up and jumping straight into your phone or to-do list, give yourself 10 minutes of silence

Stretch, breathe, or just sit with your coffee / tea.

When you start your morning softly, your mind has time to catch up with your body, helping you feel more grounded and focused throughout the day.

3. Create a “calm corner”

Choose one cozy spot in your home and make it your calm corner.

Keep a few grounding tools nearby, like a journal, a candle, or a blanket.

Whenever you start to feel anxious or overstimulated, go there for a few minutes without your phone.

The routine of returning to a peaceful space helps signal to your brain that it’s safe to relax.

4. Practice “gentle pausing”

When you feel rushed, overwhelmed, or caught in overthinking, try pausing for a few seconds before responding or reacting.

Take one deep breath and notice what’s happening around you, the sound of your breath, the texture of your clothes, or the feeling of spinning your fidget ring.

These small pauses create space between your thoughts and your actions, which helps regulate your mood and bring you back to the present moment.

5. Do one thing just for fun

During busy seasons, joy often gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

But doing something just because it feels good, like treating yourself to something small, reminds your brain that not everything has to be productive.

6. Do a breathing exercise with your fidget ring

Fidget rings are designed to help you stay grounded in the moment.

When you spin and fidget with your ring, it gives your hands something gentle to focus on while your mind slows down

Take deep breaths while spinning your ring and you’ll notice you’ll start to feel more centered

Wishing you a calmer holiday season
