I heard this exercise on a podcast the other day and had to try it - it instantly helped me slow down and feel more present.
So of course, I had to share it with you.
I’ve been calling it:
"The Little Things" Grounding Exercise
Why it works
When your brain is spinning with too many thoughts, focusing on the little things around you brings you back to the present moment.
It pulls you out of your head and into your body by activating your senses - which helps stop overthinking and ease anxiety.
It’s simple, but powerful.
Try it with me - it only takes a minute
Grab a glass of water. Then ask yourself:
What do you see?
Do you notice the sunlight reflecting off the water?
Are there any reflections or shadows on the glass?
What do you hear?
Lightly tap the glass with your ring or nail. What sound does it make?
What do you feel?
Is the glass cold in your hand?
Is there condensation on the outside? What does it feel like on your skin?
Notice anything different?
I was surprised by how many little details I normally miss when I’m rushing through the day. But when I slow down and pay attention, I feel calmer and more grounded.
Tip:
You can do this with anything - your tea, your notebook, your fidget ring. Just pick one everyday object and notice all the small details using your senses.
