Traveling can be so exciting - but let’s be honest, if you’re someone who overthinks or struggles with anxiety, it can also feel really stressful.
I love the idea of a trip, but the days leading up to it are always stressful.
My brain goes into full “what if” mode:
What if I forget something?
What if I can’t sleep?
What if I leave something behind?
If you’ve ever felt that way too - you’re not alone.
The good news is, there are simple ways to calm your nerves and actually enjoy your trip.
Here are some of my go-to tips:
1. Make your packing list early
Don’t wait until the last minute.
Start your list a week before your trip so you can add to it as things pop into your head.
Bonus tip: use the Notes app on your phone so it’s always with you (and check things off as you pack!).
2. Wear your fidget ring
Having something familiar with you makes a huge difference - especially in crowded airports or unfamiliar cities.
Fidget rings are subtle, quiet, and help keep your hands busy, which can soothe your nervous system when things feel overwhelming.
I always wear mine when I travel, especially if I have to go on a flight.
3. Create a “Calm Down” playlist
Music can shift your mood so quickly.
I like to make a playlist with my favorite songs and a few of my usual podcasts so I can hear familiar voices, and that really helps.
This way you’ll have something to listen to on the plane, in the hotel, or whenever you need it.
Make sure to download it in case you don’t have Wi-Fi!
4. Use the 333 Rule
This quick grounding exercise is great if you start to feel anxious mid-trip.
Just stop and do this:
Name 3 things you see
Name 3 things you hear
Move 3 parts of your body
It pulls your attention away from racing thoughts and back into the present.
5. Bring something that smells like home
This might sound silly, but bringing something that smells familiar (like a favorite lotion or essential oil) can actually help calm your nervous system.
Scent is powerful - it can remind your brain, you’re safe.
6. Build in buffer time
If you get anxious about being late, leave extra time for everything: airport lines, getting to your hotel, meals, etc.
Feeling rushed is a big anxiety trigger, so giving yourself that cushion can make the whole day feel easier.
I hope these tips help you feel more grounded, calm, and in control on your next trip.
